The Union Public Service Commission has released the official answer key for Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2025, General Studies Paper 1. Unlike the provisional keys put out by coaching institutes right after the exam, this is UPSC's own final key, published only after the full examination cycle ended. It is the key UPSC itself used to mark your paper.
If you wrote Prelims 2025, this is the most reliable way to know exactly how many marks you scored in GS Paper 1. If you are preparing for the next attempt, it is the cleanest way to self-test on a real paper. You can see the full answer table for all four series on our UPSC Prelims 2025 GS Paper 1 Official Answer Key page.
| Key Facts at a Glance |
| Exam | Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2025 |
| Paper | General Studies Paper 1 |
| Exam Date | 25 May 2025 |
| Official Key Released | 13 May 2026 |
| Total Questions | 100 |
| Questions Dropped | 0 |
| Maximum Marks | 200 |
| Series | A, B, C, D |
Step 1: Use the right series
UPSC prints the same 100 questions in four different orders, called Series A, B, C and D. Your series is printed on the top of your question booklet and you also marked it on your OMR sheet. Only use the column for your own series. Checking answers against the wrong series is the most common mistake candidates make, and it can make a good paper look like a disaster.
Step 2: Count correct, wrong and unattempted
Go through your responses one by one and sort every question into three groups: correct, wrong and not attempted. Your three counts must add up to 100. If they do not, recheck before moving on.
Step 3: Apply the marking scheme
| UPSC GS Paper 1 Marking Scheme |
| Each correct answer earns 2 marks. Each wrong answer costs one-third of the marks for that question, which is 0.66 marks. Questions you leave blank cost nothing. So: Score = (Correct × 2) − (Wrong × 0.66). |
| Worked Examples |
| Attempted | Correct | Wrong | Calculation | Score |
| 90 | 60 | 30 | 120 − 19.8 | 100.2 |
| 80 | 58 | 22 | 116 − 14.52 | 101.48 |
| 70 | 55 | 15 | 110 − 9.9 | 100.1 |
| 95 | 55 | 40 | 110 − 26.4 | 83.6 |
Look at the first three rows. Three very different attempt strategies land at almost the same score, around 100. The last row shows the danger: attempting more questions with a lower hit rate cost the candidate about 17 marks compared to the others. Accuracy matters as much as attempts in UPSC Prelims.
Why no question was dropped matters
When UPSC drops a question, everyone is marked out of fewer questions. In 2025, UPSC dropped zero questions from GS Paper 1, so all 100 questions count. If coaching keys you saw earlier disagreed with UPSC on a question, UPSC's answer is the one that counted. There is no challenge window for this key because it is released after the process is complete.
Remember: GS Paper 2 (CSAT) is qualifying
Your merit for Prelims is decided only by GS Paper 1. GS Paper 2, commonly called CSAT, is qualifying: you need at least 33% (66 out of 200) in it, but those marks are not added to your score. A strong GS Paper 1 score does not help if CSAT falls below 33%, so check that paper's key as well.
How to use this key if you are preparing for the next attempt
- Attempt the paper under real conditions. Download the official 2025 question paper from UPSC, set a 2-hour timer and solve it without help.
- Score it honestly using the official key and the formula above.
- Classify every wrong answer. Was it a knowledge gap, a misread statement, or a guess that went wrong? Each needs a different fix.
- Track your guessing. Mark which answers were guesses. If your guesses are right less than one time in three, you are losing marks to negative marking and should guess less.
- Repeat with older papers. UPSC's official keys for earlier years are also on its website, so you can build the same habit across several years.

| Important Questions |
- Question: Is the UPSC Prelims 2025 GS Paper 1 answer key final?
Answer: Yes. UPSC publishes its answer key only after the entire Civil Services examination process is over, so it is final and cannot be challenged.
- Question: How many marks are deducted for a wrong answer in UPSC Prelims GS Paper 1?
Answer: One-third of the marks for that question, which is 0.66 marks, because each question carries 2 marks.
- Question: Were any questions dropped in UPSC Prelims 2025 GS Paper 1?
Answer: No. All 100 questions were counted for scoring.
- Question: Are CSAT marks added to the Prelims score?
Answer: No. CSAT (GS Paper 2) is qualifying. You need at least 33% in it, but merit is based only on GS Paper 1.
