CDS 2 2026 Result Out: Complete SSB Interview Guide for 8,956 Qualified Candidates
UPSC declared the CDS (II) 2026 written result on 19 October 2026, and 8,956 candidates have qualified for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. The written exam got you to the door; the SSB decides whether you walk through it, and in most years far fewer than one in ten SSB candidates are finally recommended. This guide explains the five-day SSB process, how your written and SSB marks combine into the final merit list, what to carry, and how to use the weeks before your call-up. First, confirm your roll number: UPSC CDS 2 Result 2026 – official PDF.
What Happens Right After the Written Result
- Check every course list in the PDF (IMA, INA, AFA, OTA Men, OTA Women). Your roll number can appear in more than one.
- Read page 1 of the result PDF for the registration and certificate-submission instructions. Deadlines differ by course; miss one and you can lose that course.
- Army entries are handled through joinindianarmy.nic.in, Navy through joinindiannavy.gov.in, and Air Force (AFA) through the Air Force Selection Boards. Keep your UPSC-registered email and phone active: call-up letters come there.
- Your SSB centre and date are allotted by the respective service. Dates are spread over several months, so some candidates report within weeks and others much later.
How the Final Merit List Is Made
| CDS Marks That Count |
| Course | Written exam marks | SSB marks | Final merit total |
| IMA, INA, AFA | 300 (English 100, GK 100, Elementary Maths 100) | 300 | 600 |
| OTA (Men and Women) | 200 (English 100, GK 100) | 200 | 400 |
Because the SSB carries as much weight as the written paper, a strong SSB performance can overtake a candidate who scored higher in the written exam. Being recommended at SSB is not enough on its own: you must also be medically fit and rank within the vacancies for your course.
The 5-Day SSB Process
| SSB Day by Day |
| Day | Stage | What happens |
| Day 1 | Stage I Screening | Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests – verbal and non-verbal reasoning – followed by the Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT): you see a hazy picture briefly, write a story, then narrate it and discuss it in a group. Candidates not screened in go home the same day. |
| Day 2 | Psychology tests | Thematic Apperception Test (TAT, a series of pictures including one blank), Word Association Test (WAT, about 60 words), Situation Reaction Test (SRT, about 60 situations) and Self Description (SD: how your parents, teachers, friends and you see yourself). |
| Days 3–4 | Group Testing (GTO) and Interview | Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task, Half Group Task, Individual Obstacles, Command Task, Lecturette and Final Group Task. The personal interview with the Interviewing Officer takes place on one of these days (sometimes on Day 2). |
| Day 5 | Conference | All assessors meet each candidate briefly and agree on a result. Recommended candidates are announced and move on to the medical examination. |
| What the Assessors Look For |
| All three techniques (psychology, GTO and interview) look for the same officer-like qualities: effective intelligence, reasoning, organising ability, social adaptability, cooperation, sense of responsibility, initiative, self-confidence, speed of decision, ability to influence a group, liveliness, determination, courage and stamina. Consistency matters more than brilliance in any single task. Your Self Description, your PIQ form and your interview answers should describe the same person. |
Air Force Academy Candidates
Candidates for AFA report to an Air Force Selection Board, where the flying branch also requires the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS). CPSS is a one-time test: a candidate who has failed it before cannot take it again and is not eligible for the flying branch. Check your AFSB call-up letter for the exact sequence.
Documents to Carry to the SSB
- SSB call-up letter (printed) and UPSC admit card / result printout showing your roll number
- Original and photocopies of Class 10 certificate (date of birth proof) and graduation degree or provisional certificate / final-year proof, as your course requires
- Government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence)
- Recent passport-size photographs (keep 15–20; you will use many)
- Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) details ready: education, marks, activities, sports, family
- Sports shoes and kit for GTO outdoor tasks, plus formal clothes for the interview
- Check your call-up letter for any additional item it lists
4-Week SSB Preparation Plan
| Week-wise Plan |
| Week | Focus | Daily practice |
| Week 1 | Screening | 30 OIR questions a day; write and narrate 2 PPDT stories aloud in 1 minute each; join or form a group to practise discussion |
| Week 2 | Psychology | 12 TAT stories in timed conditions, 60 WAT responses, 30 SRTs; draft your Self Description honestly and refine it |
| Week 3 | GTO and current affairs | Group Discussion on national topics; 3 lecturettes of 3 minutes; daily newspaper editorial; run or exercise 30 minutes for stamina |
| Week 4 | Interview and consolidation | Mock interview using your PIQ; revise your own biodata, hometown, academics and hobbies in depth; full rest the day before reporting |
Common Mistakes That Cost Recommendations
- Writing memorised 'model' TAT stories or WAT sentences. Assessors see thousands and spot rehearsed answers.
- Dominating the Group Discussion or GTO tasks instead of helping the group succeed.
- Interview answers that contradict what you wrote in the PIQ or Self Description.
- Neglecting fitness: Individual Obstacles and outdoor tasks are physically demanding.
- Ignoring the registration or certificate deadline in the UPSC result note.
